METALLICA

Ketika itu aku sedang di toko kaset yang ada di Capitol Plaza, sebuah toko yang lumayan besar tapi yah nga begitu komplit sih. Ada sebuah kaset keluaran Billboard di sana yang baru datang katanya, covernya biru bergambar kursi listrik, wuih sedap bener, nama bandnya pun baru pernah terdengar di kala itu juga, Metallica, wuih baca namanya sih pasti keren kayaknya dan yang pasti musiknya metal, sebab namanya juga udah ada nama bandnya. Dan kaset Ride the lightning ada di tanganku. Aku bawa pulang ke rumahku yang jaraknya paling 400 meter. Deket banget memang. Dan langsung aku dengerin kasetnya, di covernya lagu pertamanya adalah sebuah judul yang sangat gagah terbaca olehku : Fight fire with fire. Side a is playing, lah kok musik slow gini, pikir aku pada awalnya, dan pas masuk ke lagu yang sebenernya, langsung kupingku menangkap sebuah musik yang begitu baru dan cepat kayak peluru, dan sang vokalis berteriak :

Kegilaan terus berlanjut sampai akhir side a dari kaset kemudian disambung lagi ke lagu lainnya. Itulah waktu pertama kali aku dengerinnih band super edan nan sinting keren abis. Dan inilah kegilaan mereka :

Kita kembali ke sebuah tahun yang telah lewat hampir 27 tahun lalu, kita kembali ke sebuah tahun ber-angka, 1980. Denmark, sebagai sebuah negara di kawasan Eropa, sudah tentu negara ini juga terkena imbas dari sebuah musik metal yang berasal dari Inggris yang bernama NWOBHM, sebuah musik metal yang sedang mencuat di arena musik metal dunia kala itu. Jaguar, Tyson Dog, Atomkraft, Tygers of Pan Tang, Quartz, Satan dsb menjadi band-band yang menghantam berbagai arena metal musik di dunia kala itu. Setiap generasi muda pada saat itu yang menggilai musik metal, di pastikan akan sangat tergila - gila dengan musik yang satu ini. Begitu juga dengan seorang pemuda asal Denmarkini. Sang pemuda sangat tergila-gila dengan band-band metal asal Inggris tersebut, bahkan mungkin sudah dalam taraf kecanduan berat. Sebagai seorang pemuda yang sangat menyukai musik, karena memangketika kecil pun dia sudah mengenal musik dari keluarganya. Dan alat musik yang di berikan padanya oleh sang ayah ketika remaja adalah ....drum. Tak lama kemudian sang pemuda dan keluarganya pindah ke Amerika. Dan disinilah sang pemuda yang belum mengenal negara barunya, Amerika, tepatnya kota Los Angeles, California, mulai lebih menekuni mendalami permainan drumnya. Dan mulailah benih-benih untuk menjadi musisi melekat di diri sang pemuda tersebut, hingga untuk itu mulailah dia berkeinginan untuk membentuk sebuah band, berbagai cara telah di coba dirinya untuk membentuk band impiannya tersebut, namun keadaan sekitarnya belum mendukung keinginannya. Rasa frustasi mulai muncul di hatinya, hingga akhirnya sang pemuda itupun memasang sebuah iklan untuk mewujudkan impiannya itu, di sebuah majalah yang bernamaRecycler. Setelah lama menunggu jawaban, akhirnya sang pemuda pun mendapatkan respon dari seseorang. Sang pemuda ini bernama.....LARS ULRICH dan seseorang yang merespon iklannya adalah sang master : JAMES HETFIELD. Mereka pun bertemu dan akhirnya bersatu. Mereka berdua

pun mengadakan latihan-latihan.

Setelah bertemu dengan James dan berkomitmen untuk membentuk sebuah band, Lars untuk sementara waktu pergi ke negara Inggris untuk....mengikuti jadwal konser sebuah band NWOBHM bernama Diamond Head,...selama 2 bulan lamanya. Ck..ck...ck..memang udah gila nih orang. Dan Lars kembali lagi ke Amerika di bulan September 1981. Dan sekembali dari Inggris, kemudian Lars mengontak sang teman band barunya, James. Lalu Lars serta James kemudian berjanji akan menempati janjinya kepada kenalan mereka yang juga pemilik sebuah label baru yang bernama Metal Blade Records, di sini mereka berjanji akan memberikan satu lagu bagi Brian Slagel, sang pemilik lagu yang dimaksud, untuk di masukkan kedalam sebuah kompilasi yang nanti akan di rilis oleh Brian. Namun kini mereka kebingungan untuk hal tersebut, karena mereka belum mempunyai sebuah bandpun yang terbentuk. Hingga kemudian ereka berdua memanggil seorang teman yang bernama : LLYOD GRANT. Dan posisi mereka adalah Lars pada drum, James pada vokal, gitar dan bas gitar serta Lloyd pada gitar. Inilah formasi paling awal dari band ini. Dan kemudian nama band mereka di berikan oleh Ron Quintana, seorang teman dari Bay Area. Semula nama tersebut akan di gunakan oleh Ron sebagai nama majalah musik metal yang akan di buatnya, namun karena Lars memintanya, Ron pun mengijinkan nama tersebut untuk di gunakan oleh Lars. Dan majalah Ron kemudian di beri nama : Metal Mania. 

Memasuki tahun yang baru, 1982, setelah berlatih dengan seksama, di bulan Maret, Metallica ( di singkat : MT ) mendapatkan tawaran untuk tampil di California, akhirnya merekapun untuk pertama kalinya tampil di sebuah tempat bernama Radio City di Anaheim, California. Dan setelah konser ini Lloyd keluar dari band. Namun Lars dan James terus bertahan. Kembali Lars dan James mencari anggota band baru. untuk bandnya. Dan mereka kemudian menawarkan kepada seorang pemain gitar bernama : DAVE MUSTAINE, yang kala itu merupakan anggota dari sebuah band yang bernama PANIC, sebuah band yang di bentuknya di sekitar awal 80an oleh Dave M. James kemudian mengundang teman dekatnya yang juga seorang pemain bas gitar bernama RON McGOVNEY. Hingga akhirnya formasi bandpun terbentuk. Kemudian Metallica pun merekam sebuah demo dengan menggunakan peralatan yang sederhana, sebuah demo yang berjudul : HIT THE LIGHTS,sebuah demo dengan 2 lagu daur ulang dan 1 lagu MT, di buat di bulan Maret 1982, 2 minggu kemudian di buat demo yang kedua dengan judul : RON McGOVNEY’S ’82 GARAGE DEMO dan 2 minggu selanjutnya sebuah demo kembali di buat yang nantinya di sebut dengan nama : POWER METAL. Sebuah demo berisi 4 buah lagu, dan sebuah lagu di demo ini kemudian di berikan oleh Lars serta James kepada Brian Slagel. Nama Metallica kemudian mulai terdengar di seluruh penjuru Amerika, dan tepat sebulan kemudian, di bulan april 1982, Metallica kembali mengadakan konser, kali ini mereka menjadi band pembuka bagi sebuah band super keren dengan NWOBHM musiknya yaitu Saxon, yang sedang berpromosi untuk album mereka yang berjudul : Denim and Leather, dalam tur ini Metallica di bantu oleh seorang gitaris lain yang bernama Brad Parker. Hanya setelah konser selesai Brad Parker pun hengkang dari band ini Di bulan Mei tahun 1982, Metallica mengundang seorang untuk posisi vokalis bernama : JEF WARNER. Namun Jef hanya bertahan selama......1 bulan saja di band ini. Setelah itu di bulan selanjutnya, Metallica mendapatkan kabar dari Brian Slagel, sangpemilik Metal Blade Records, kalau dia telah merilis sebuah kompilasi yang berjudul : Metal Massacre, ini merupakan rilisan yang paling pertama dari label keren ini. Dan lagu Hit The Light di masukkan Brian ke kompilasi ini.

Selanjutnya di bulan Juli, Metallica kembali merekam sebuah demo, demo inilah yang membuat jalan hidup mereka akan berubah sebagai sebuah band. Demo ini secara resmi tidak pernah di rilis oleh band ini, hanya Metallica membuat beberapa kopiannya saja, namun yang terjadi demo ini beredar dengan luas di kalangan penggila musik metal di Amerika. Demo ini berjudul : NO LIFE 'TIL LEATHER. Sebuah demo yangberisi 7 buah lagu. Sebuah demo yang menjadi sangat terkenal di lihat

dari banyaknya demo ini yang beredar. Metallica sendiri kebingungan ketika mengetahui hal ini, mereka membuat kurang lebih 5 buah kopian dari demo ini, kemudian di sebarkan ke teman-temannya, dan kemudian mungkin telah ribuan orang yang memiliki demo ini. Selanjutnya di bulan Agustus, Brian, mengajak James dan Lars untuk menyaksikan sebuah konser di sebuah tempat bernama Whiskey A Go Go, di sana James dan Lars menyaksikan konser sebuah band bernama : Trauma. Dan mereka berdua pun terkejut dengan permainan sang bassis bernama : CLIFF BURTON. Singkat kata James dan Lars kemudian mengajak Cliff untuk bergabung dengan Metallica, namun Cliff menolak jika dia harus ke Los Angeles, lain ceritanya kalau Metallica yang pindah ke San Fransisco. Itulah syarat yang di minta oleh sang bassis master.

Kompilasi Metal Massacre dengan segera menguncang arena musik metal di Amerika, dengan cepat kompilasi ini di kenal luas di hampir seluruh kawasan Amerika, dan tak lama kemudian, di bulan September 1982, Brian pun mengadakan konser untuk promosi kompilasinya tersebut. Brian mengundang Metallica untuk tampil di San Fransisco, tepatnya di Bay Area yang terkenal itu. Dan Metallica pun menggetarkan panggung didaerah tersebut, dan Metallica pun kemudian tampil beberapa kali di berbagai tempat di daerah ini selain untuk promosi Metal Massacre. Di bulan November 1982, Metallica kembali tampil di sebuah tempat di San Fransisco bernama The Old Waldorf, dan di tempat inilah mereka untuk pertama kalinya berkenalan dengan seorang gitaris kalem namun edan bernama : KIRK HAMMET. Kirk di tempat ini sedang tampil dengan bandnya : Exodus. Yang mana Exodus di kala itu adalah band pembuka bagi Metallica. Konser ini di rekam dan kemudian di kenal dengan judul : LIVE METAL UP YOUR ASS DEMO. Tak lama kemudian sebuah demo kembali di buat oleh MT dengan judul : HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE. Kemudian konser pun berlanjut di akhir bulan tersebut, kali ini Metallica tampil di sebuah tempat bernama Mabuhay Garden, sebuah tempat di San Fransisco. Setelah konser selesai kemudian band inipun mulai menghadapi masalah anggota band, Ron M sang bassis keluar dari band, karena dia merasa James dan Lars sudah tidak lagi tertarik dengan permainannya dan dia juga mendengar kabar kalau Cliff akan bergabung dengan band ini. Dan akhirnya Ron pun meninggalkan band ini. Tak lama kemudian memang Cliff di undang oleh James dan Lars untuk bergabung dengan band. Dan latihan yang pertama dengan sang bassis master edan ini di lakukan di bulan berikutnya, Desember 1982.

Di sebuah kota besar lainnya di Amerika, tepatnya New York, di awal tahun 1983, seorang pemilik toko piringan hitam sedang duduk di kursi di tokonya ketika seorang pemuda, yang juga langganannya, memberi sebuah kaset kepada sang pemilik toko, hanya sang pemilik toko tersebut menyimpannya tanpa mendengarkannya dulu. Ketika sore hari menjelang malam tiba dan toko piringan yang bernama : Metal Heaven ini tutup, baru sang pemilik yang bernama : Jon Zazula, punya waktu untuk mendengarkan kaset yang di berikan oleh pemuda tadi, dan Jon pun langsung terkejut dengan apa yang di dengarkannya, sebuah musik yang begitu orisinil melalui telinganya dengan cepat, dan menghantam otak serta hatinya dengan segera, musik yang begitu dashyat baru saja di dengarnya, dan kemudian diapun melihat nama band di kaset tersebut yang bertuliskan : Metallica. Keesokan harinya, tanpa menyita waktu, Jon pun mengundang Metallica untuk tampil di kotanya, New York, sekaligus juga rencana untuk menanda tangani sebuah kontrak dengannya. Jon pun berkeliling New York untuk mendapatkan label bagi Metallica, namun setelah lama mencari, Jon tidak juga mendapatkan label yang tertarik dengan Metallica, hingga akhirnya Jon memutuskan untuk

mendirikan labelnya sendiri yang bernama : Megaforce Records. Dan akhirnya di bulan Maret 1983, Metallica pun berkunjung ke New York atas undangan Jon. Di NY, Metallica pun tampil di berbagai tempat, dan salah satunya adalah menjadi band pembuka bagi sebuah band super master asal Inggris bernama : Venom, yang sedang ber promosi untuk album 1982, Black Metal yang di rilis oleh Neat Records. Selama konser-konser di NY inilah, mulai tampak kelakukan sang gitaris Dave M, yang terpengaruh oleh minuman keras serta obat-obatan hingga sewaktu sangat menggangu jalannya konser-konser Metallica. Dan puncaknya setelah konser dengan Venom tersebut, Dave pun di pecat dari band ini oleh James dan Lars. Tak lama James pun menelepon Kirk dan memintanya untuk datang bergabung dengan Metallica, namun Kirk masih belum percaya dengan pendengarannya tersebut, hingga James pun meneleponnya kembali dan Kirk pun percaya kalau James dan Lars tidaklah sedang bercanda, dan akhirnya Kirk pun naik pesawat dan bergabung dengan band ini.

Kembali ke San Fransisco di bulan yang sama, mereka pun kembali tampil di sebuah konser di sebuah tempat bernama : The Stone. Seminggu kemudian mereka kembali mengunjungi studio untuk merekam sebuah demo, yang berjudul : MEGAFORCE DEMO. Demo ini dibuat oleh band, untuk lebih membuat rasa percaya Jon terhadap band lebih besar juga sebagai langkah yang di ambil oleh band untuk membuat Cliff percaya kalau James dan Lars begitu serius atas undangannya. Demo ini kemudian di siarkan secara khusus di sebuah radio di San Fransisco. 3 hari kemudian Metallica, kembali tampil di The Stone, dan kali ini konser mereka ini di rekam di sebuah video tape, sebagian dari video ini dapat di lihat dalam video resmi mereka yang berjudul : CLIFF 'EM ALL. Memasuki bulan berikutnya, April 1983, Metallica secara resmi pindah ke San Fransisco dan secara resmi juga menyatakan kalau Cliff Burton dan Kirk Hammett adalah anggota band ini. Juga secara resmi menyatakan kalau Dave Mustaine bukan anggota band mereka lagi. Selanjutnya MT tampil kembali di New York, di tempat bernama L’Amours. Memasuki bulan Mei 1983, band ini kembali ke studio untuk merekam album mereka yang pertama, yang di produseri oleh Paul Curcio. Dan MT kemudian menamai album mereka ini : METAL UP YOUR ASS. Namun pihak distributor menolak untuk menggunakan judul seperti itu, hingga akhirnya MT menggantinya dengan judul : KILL ‘EM ALL. Dan akhirnya album ini dirilis di bulan Juli 1983 dengan label Megaforce Records. Setelah itu tur pun di gelar oleh MT, di mulai di akhir bulan Juni 1983. Tur ini mencakup seluruh Amerika. Dalam tur ini, MT di temani oleh band asal Inggris bernama : Raven, yang sedang berpromosi untuk album mereka yang terbaru berjudul : All For One, rilisan Neat Records, hingga tur ini kemudian di beri judul : Kill ‘Em All For One Tour, gabungan dari nama album masing-masing band. Dan tur ini kemudian berakhir di awal bulan September 1983.

Setelah selesai dengan tur tersebut, kembali MT menulis lagu baru untuk album baru, penulisan lagu di mulai di bulan Oktober sampai akhir tahun 1983. Dan di bulan Oktober 1983, MT membuat kembali sebuah demo yang berjudul : RIDE THE LIGHTNING. Memasuki tahun 1984, MT berkenalan dengan seorang produser asal Denmark, Flemming Rassmussen,  dan singkat kata MT pun menjalin kerja sama dengan produser ini, dan selanjutnya MT pun terbang ke Denmark untuk merekam lagu barunya di sebuah studio bernama Sweet Silence. Selesai dengan proses rekaman tersebut, MT kembali menggelar tur, kali ini mereka mengunjungi Eropa  untuk pertama kalinya. Kali ini mereka menjadi band pembuka untuk sebuah band Inggris, Venom, yang sedang ber promosi untuk album barunya, At War With Satan. Tur di Eropa, di mulai dari Swiss kemudian Jerman, Perancis serta Belgia dan berakhir di sebuah festival yang bernama Aardshock Festival di Belanda. Dan untuk mempromosikan tur Eropanya, Jon bekerja sama dengan label asal Inggris, Music For Nations, untuk merilis sebuah ep yang berjudul : JUMP IN THE FIRE. Selesai dengan tur tersebut, di akhir Juli 1984, MT merilis album barunya, RIDE THE LIGHTNING. Sebuah album yang begitu edan di kala itu, musik yang begitu menggelora dan hebat, membuat nama mereka kemudian menjadi buah bibir di manapun di dunia.

Dengan album baru tersebut, nama MT memang menjadi begitu menarik bagi media massa, maupun bagi label – label besar, dan sebuah label besar yang sangat tertarik dengan MT adalah Elektra Records. Namun kontrak secara langsung belumlah terjadi kala itu. Di bulan November 1984, MT merilis sebuah ep yang berjudul : CREEPING DEATH. Sebuah ep yang berisi 2 lagu daur ulang dan 1 lagu band ini. Setelah itu kembali MT menggelar tur ke Eropa, mereka berkunjung ke Jerman, Perancis, Belgia, Swiss, Inggris, Itali, Finlandia, Belanda dan juga Swedia. Masuk ke tahun berikutnya, 1985, MT kembali menggelar tur panjangnya, kali ini di seluruh Amerika, di mulai di bulan Januari. Di bulan Februari, ketika MT masih dalam tur panjangnya, Megaforce Records merilis kembali sebuah ep yang berjudul : WHIPLASH. Tur ini kemudian berakhir di bulan Maret 1985. Dan di bulan Juli 1985, MT kemudian merilis sebuah demo kembali yang berjudul : MASTER OF PUPPETS DEMO. Setelah demo di rilis, di bulan Agustus tahun 1985, MT berkesempatan untuk pertama kalinya tampil di hadapan kurang lebih 75000 penggila metal di sebuah festival yang bernama : Monsters Of Rock Festival di Inggris. Dalam festival ini, posisi MT berada di antara 2 band glam rock, dengan susunan, Ratt – Metallica – Bon Jovi. Dan susunan tersebut membuat sang vokalis MT, James menjadi kesal dan ketika MT memulai konsernya, James pun berteriak lantang dengan berkata : "If you came here to see spandex, eye makeup, and the words 'Oh baby' in every fuckin' song, this ain't the fuckin' band."

Setelah konser tersebut, MT kembali berkunjung ke Denmark, ke kota Copenhagen untuk tepatnya, dan memulai kembali merekam lagu - lagu barunya bersama dengan produser yang sama, Flemming R. Proses rekamanini menghabiskan waktu hampir 3 bulan lamanya. Setelah proses rekaman selesai, kembali MT kembali tampil di beberapa konser sampai tahun 1985 pun berakhir. Dan tahun 1986 pun di mulai, di bulan Januari 1986, MT merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : MASTER OF PUPPETS. Single ini juga menandakan kerja sama yang baru antara MT dengan label barunya Elektra Records. Dan akhirnya di bulan Maret 1986, MT merilis album barunya yang berjudul : MASTER OF PUPPETS. Dan selanjutnya kembali tur di gelar oleh MT, di awali di akhir bulan Maret 1986, kali ini MTmenjadi band pembuka bagi sebuah band milik sang master and father of metal music, Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy sedang mempromosikan album barunya The Ultimate Sin, rilisan 1986 Epic Records. Tur ini mencakup hampir seluruh Amerika. Namun sesuatu kemudian terjadi, ketika mereka sedang konser di Indiana, James mengalami kesakitan di pergelangan tangannya, hingga menyebabkan konser tersebut di batalkan, namun untuk konser selanjutnya James di bantu oleh seorang crew untuk Kirk yaitu John Marshall, yang kita kenal sebagai gitaris sebuah band Amerika juga, Metal Church. Hingga akhirnya tur selanjutnya dapat di selesaikan oleh MT.

Ketika itu di sebuah hari tanggal 27 September 1986, ketika itu band ini sdang dalam perjalanan di sebuah daerah di antara Skandinavia dan Denmark, 2 buah bus band ini berjalan beriringan satu sama lainnya di sebuah jalan, jalan yang begitu sepi kala itu karena hari memang masih subuh waktu setempat, hingga tak ada kendaraan lainnya yang lalu lalang di jalan tersebut, dan tiba – tiba sebuah bis yang berada di posisi belakang, berbelok ke sebelah kanan, dan dan bis pun menjadi tak terkendali oleh sang sopir, hingga akhirnya bis pun menabrak bis yang ada di posisi depannya, kemudian bis inipun terbalik di pinggir sebuah jalan yang kemudian di ketahui sebagai sebuah jalan yang dekat dengan sebuah kota di negara Swedia bernama Ljungby. Setelah kedua bis berhenti, dengan tergesa-gesa semua orang yang ada di kedua bis inipun berhamburan keluar untuk berlindung ke tempat yang lebih aman, Lars, James dan Kirk pun keluar dari bis tersebut beserta para anggota crew lainnya, namun kemudian James melihat sebuah keadaan yang sangat mengerikan, sang bassis Cliff terbaring di atas tanah dan tubuhnya terhimpit oleh bis yang terguling tersebut. Setelah itu polisi pun berdatangan ke tempat kejadian, dan juga mobil ambulan, dan tak lama kemudian Cliff Burton, sang bassis jenius berusia 24 tahun di nyatakan meninggal dunia. God bless you Cliff !!!

Kesedihan yang mendalam melanda band ini, terutama James yang melihat dengan jelas bagaimana keadaan Cliff waktu terjadi kecelakaan. Dan para anggota band berpendapat kalau kecelakaan ini terjadi di sebabkan oleh ....minuman beralkohol. Begitu terlukanya hati James hingga kemarahan pun tak dapat tertahankan lagi, di sebuah hotel tempat mereka menginap setelah kecelakaan tersebut, James dengan kemarahan yang memuncak menghancurkan dua buah jendela di hotel tersebut, dan berteriak sekencang-kencangnya untuk melampiaskan kemarahannya tersebut. Dan akhirnya band inipun memutuskan untuk kembali ke Amerika pada hari itu juga. Di Amerika kedukaan ini berkelanjutan di ketiga anggota band ini, Lars, James dan Kirk begitu sedih dengan meninggalnya Cliff. Namun tak lama kemudian atas dorongan keras dari orang tua sang Cliff yang meminta kepada 3 anggota band ini untuk tetap mempertahankan MT. Sebulan kemudian audisi pun di mulai untuk mencari pemain bas gitar untuk menggantikan Cliff. Lebih dari 50 orang mengikuti audisi ini, salah satunya adalah seseorang asal Michigan. Sebelum ke tempat audisi ini pemuda ini mempelajari lagu-lagu MT terlebih dahulu, dan ketika waktu audisi baginya tiba, ketiga anggota band MT pun bertanya padanya, " Apa yang anda akan mainkan ?", sang pemuda menjawab dengan percaya diri, "Apapun yang anda semua inginkan". Pada akhir audisi terpilih 5 orang kandidat, namun kemudian

hanya JASON NEWSTED, yang di undang untuk minum bersama di sebuah bar bernama : Tommy's Joint. Sebelum ketiga anggota band ini meninggalkan ruangan bar, mereka pun berembuk di sudut bar tersebut dan kemudian kembali lagi ke hadapan Jason N dan berkata   "Selamat datang di Metallica ".  wuih sedap tenan kedengerannya yah.

Dan akhirnya di awal bulan November 1986, untuk pertama kalinya Jason di perkenalkan kepada publik melalui sebuah konser di California, di sebuah tempat bernama The Country Club bersama dengan Metal Church dan esoknya MT tampil di sebuah tempat di Anaheim bernama : Jezabelle. Konser pun kemudian berlanjut ke negara tetangga, Kanada, sampai akhir tahun 1986. Tahun 1987 di mulai oleh MT dengan mengadakan tur panjang ke Eropa, sampai dengan bulan Februari 1987. Selesai dengan tur tersebut, kemudian MT kembali ke Amerika dan kemudian beristirahat dari semua kegiatan musik. Baru kemudian di awal bulan Agustus 1987, MT merilis kembali sebuah ep yang berjudul : GARAGE DAYS RE-REVISITED. Kemudian tak lama MT kembali merilis sebuah demo  yang berjudul : AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. Kemudian tur kembali lagi di gelar oleh MT, kali ini kembali MT merambah ke Eropa dengan tur pertama di Inggris dan di lanjutkan ke Jerman. Dan setelah kembali dari tur tersebut, di awal bulan Desember 1987, MT merilis video mereka yang pertama yang berjudul : CLIFF ‘EM ALL. Sebuah video sebagai penghargaan MT untuk jasa Cliff yang telah menyumbangkan musiknya bagi kemajuan MT.

Di awal tahun 1988, MT kembali merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : ONE. Tak lama setelah di rilis, di bulan Mei 1988, MT mengikuti sebuah festival yang baru pertama di adakan di Amerika yaitu : Monster Of Rock Festival yang di adakan di Los Angeles, kali ini MT di temani oleh sebuah band asal Amerika juga, Van Halen. Dan di lanjutkan dengan menggelar konser di seluruh Amerika. Dan di awal bulan Agustus kembali MT merilis single yang terbaru dengan judul : EYE OF THE BEHOLDER. Dan di akhir bulan yang sama, MT baru merilis album baru mereka yang berjudul : ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. Sebulan setelah itu tentu saja MT menggelar tur Eropa kembali dengan nama Damaged Justice Tour, yang di awali dengan sebuah konser di sebuah lapangan sepak bola di Budapest, Hungaria. Di bulan Oktober 1988, Elektra Records, merilis kembali sebuah single yang berjudul : HARVESTER OF SORROW. Berbagai negara Eropa mereka singgahi dan berakhir di awal bulan November 1988. Dan tur kembali berlanjut di Amerika. Dan di awal bulan Desember 1988, untuk pertama kalinya MT membuat sebuah video klip untuk lagu One. Masuk ke tahun yang baru, 1989, MT masih berada dalam rangkaian tur kembali di Amerika. Tur panjang ini di mulai di Januari 1989 sampai dengan Maret 1989. Dan di bulan Maret, ketika MT masih dalam turnya, Elektra Records merilis kembali sebuah single yang berjudul : WELCOME HOME. Dan juga merilis sebuah ep yang berjudul : ONE, khusus di rilis di Jepang oleh CBS Records Jepang. Dan Elektra kemudian kembali lagi merilis sebuah single dengan judul : ONE. Di bulan April MT merambah ke Kanada dan beberapa kota di Amerika dan memasuki bulan Mei mereka masuk ke kawasan Asia serta Australia. Tur di negara ini di awali di Australia, di kota Auckland, kemudian Jepang dan kembali lagi mereka ke Amerika dan Kanada. Di akhir bulan Juni 1989, MT merilis sebuah video kembali yang berjudul : 2 OF ONE. Tur panjang pun tetap berjalan di Amerika sampai dengan bulan September 1989. MT kemudian ke Brasil di bulan Oktober 1989. Dan setelah konser tersebut, MT kembali ke kotanya untuk beristirahat,

Di bulan Februari 1990, MT memenangkan penghargaan Grammy untuk kategori Best Metal Performance, untuk lagu mereka One. Selanjutnya di bulan Mei tahun 1990, MT merilis sebuah box set yang berisikan 6 buah piringan hitam single, yang berjudul : THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE LIVE. Kemudian di lanjutkan kembali dengan tur panjangnya ke Eropa selama kurang lebih 5 bulan. Dan kemudian di awal bulan Oktober 1990, MT kembali memasuki studio di utara Hollywood yang bernama One On One studio. Kali ini mereka di tangani oleh produser bernama Bob Rock. Dan di awal bulan selanjutnya, November 1990, MT merekam sebuah lagu daur ulang yang berjudul : Stone Cold Crazy untuk promosi bagi label mereka. Memasuki tahun 1991, MT masih berkutat dalam proses perekaman untuk album mereka yang terbaru. Di bulan Februari 1991, MT kembali mendapatkan penghargaan Grammy untuk kategori yang sama dengan tahun  lalu, Best Metal Performance untuk lagunya Stone Cold Crazy. Tak lama kemudian MT merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : ENTER THE SANDMAN, di rilis oleh sebuah label MT yang baru yaitu Vertigo Records. Dan di lanjutkan dengan merilis kembali sebuah single yang berjudul : THE UNFORGIVEN. Kemudian MT masuk dalam proses pembuatan video mereka untuk lagu Enter The Sandman, yang kemudian di siarkan di akhir bulan Juli 1991. Selanjutnya tentu saja menggelar tur super panjang, yang di mulai tanggal 1 Agustus 1991 di Petaluma, California. Tur super panjang ini di beri nama : Wherever I May Roam Tour. Dan 2 minggu setelah konser pertama tersebut, MT merilis sebuah album baru yang berjudul : METALLICA atau sering di sebut sebagai The Black Album. Di tanggal 10 Agustus 1991, MT memulai tur Eropanya yang pertama dengan mengunjungi Denmark dan berakhir di Russia di akhir bulan September  1991, di sebuah konser bertajuk Monsters Of Rock bersama dengan sebuah band asal Australia, AC/DC, MT datang ke negara tersebut atas undangan Perdana Menteri negara tersebut, konser gratis ini di saksikan oleh hampir 500000 penggila metal. Bulan Oktober MT kembali mengguncang Amerika dalam tur super panjang tersebut, di awali di Oakland, California. Dan konser ini berlanjut terus sampai di akhir bulan Desember 1991. Dan di tanggal 31 Desember 1991, MT tampil di Tokyo, Jepang.

Awal tahun 1991, MT masih dalam tur super panjangnya di seantero Amerika, hanya di bulan Februari tahun 1992, MT berkesempatan untuk menghadiri sebuah acara karena MT kembali memperoleh penghargaan Grammy untuk kategori Best Metal Performance, untuk lagunya Enter The

Sandman. Dan di akhir bulan yang sama klip video untuk lagu Nothing Else Matters beredar di berbagai media televisi. Selanjutnya tur MT terus berlangsung di sepanjang benua Amerika dan Kanada. Hanya di bulan April, MT harus ke Inggris untuk tampil dalam sebuah konser yang bertajuk : Concert For Life, sebuah konser untuk menghormati sang master di seni vokal bernama Freddie Mercury, di Wembley Stadium di London. MT menyanyikan 3 lagu di konser ini, dan kemudian di rilis dan hasil dari rilisan tersebut di donasikan untuk sebuah lembaga atas nama sang mendiang. Dan tur di Amerika pun kembali berlanjut, jadi dari bulan Januari sampai ke awal bulan Oktober, MT konser di Amerika, Kanada dan 1 kali di Inggris. Baru di awal bulan Oktober 1992, MT merambah kembali Eropa, di awali di Belgia dan berakhir di Swedia di pertengahan bulan Desember 1992. Dan di sepanjang tahun 1992 ini MT merilis 3 single, yaitu : NOTHING ELSE MATTERS, SAD BUT  TRUE dan WHEREVER I MAY ROAM serta sebuah ep konser mereka di London, yang berjudul : LIVE AT WEMBLEY STADIUM. Dan di bulan November tahun 1992, MT merilis 2 buah video kembali dengan judul : A YEARS AND A HALF IN THE LIFE OF METALLICA PART 1 dan PART 2. Dan di sebuah konser di Birmingham Inggris, di tanggal 5 November 1992, MT tampil bersama dengan idola mereka yang juga teman sang drummer, Lars Ulrich, Diamond Head, kesemua anggota band, jadi 8 orang secara bersama-sama menyanyikan 2 lagu : Am I Evil dan Helpless.

Di awal tahun 1993, MT masih dalam tur panjangnya, di mulai di sebuah kota bernama Kalamazoo, Michigan, Amerika. Dan di minggu ketiga bulan Januari 1993, MT mengunjungi Manhattan, di sini mereka membuat heboh sebuah toko musik, di mana MT sebelumnya merancang dan juga merubah sebuah toko musik di kota ini untuk di jadikan sebuah toko musik yang hanya menjual berbagai hal yang berhubungan dengan MT saja, kaos, piringan hitam, topi dsb serta juga menjual kaset yang hanya ada di toko tersebut, bisa di bayangkan gimana hebohnya toko tersebut ketika di buka untuk umum. Tur panjang terus berlanjut. Dari bulan Januari 1993 sampai akhir bulan Februari MT menggelar berbagai konser di Amerika dan Kanada. Bulan Maret merambah Meksiko, Jepang kemudian Australia. Bulan April juga Australia, Singapura, Thailand, Philippina dan INDONESIA. Mei mereka ke Brasil, Chili, Argentina dan negara Eropa lainnya. Juni, Eropa termasuk Yunani dan Israel. Juli sampai Desember 1993 MT merambah ke berbagai negara di Eropa dan juga Amerika. Dalam tahun 1993 ini, MT merilis 3 single : SAD BUT TRUE ( 2 versi ) dan ENTER SANDMAN / ONE. Juga sebuah ep yang berjudul : 15 PIECES OF LIVE SHIT PROMO, sebuah promo yang berisi 2 cd untuk tujuan promosi. Di bulan November 1993, MT merilis sebuah box set yang berjudul : LIVE SHIT : BINGE & PURGE, sebuah box set yang berisi 3 cd, 3 video dan sebuah buku.

Di awal tahun 1994, MT masih saja menggelar berbagai konser di Amerika. Di bulan Mei 1994, MT memulai kembali sebuah rangkaian tur yang bertajuk Shit Hits The Sheds atau yang di sebut sebagai Summer Shit Tour, yang di awali di New York. Di bulan selenjutnya, MT bergabung dengan 2 anggota sebuah band super keren bernama Danzig, yaitu Glenn Danzig dan Chuck Biscuts. Mereka bersama-sama menyanyikan Last Caress, sebuah lagu yang di tulis Glenn, ketika masih bersama band bernama : Misfits. Bulan  Juli, MT masih dengan Glenn dan Chuck menyanyikan London Dungeon, Last Caress dan Green Hell. Dan MT dengan Suicidal Tendencies menyanyikan So What?. Dan konser terakhir MT di  tur ini adalah di Miami, dengan bintang tamu, seorang vokalis sebuah band asal Inggris, Judas Priest, yaitu Rob Halford yang menyanyikan lagu Judas Priest bersama MT, berjudul : Rapid Fire. Memasuki tahun 1995, di bulan Februari James dan Lars mengunjungi sebuah stasiun radio di Los Angeles bernama KNAC untuk di wawancarai dan dapat di akses oleh Internet. Di bulan Mei 1995, MT mulai memasuki studio untuk memulai proses perekaman lagu baru. Di bulan Agustus 1995, MT mengadakan latihan di sebuah klub di London. Dan akhirnya di tanggal 23 Agustus tahun 1995, untuk pertma kalinya lagu mereka yang masih belum beredar, yaitu : 2 X 4 dan Devil’s Dance di mainkan oleh MT di hadapan para fans yang memenuhi sebuah tempat bernama London Astoria. Konser ini di adakan hanya untuk kalangan terbatas saja di mana para penontonnya adalah para fans yang juga anggota klub tersebut. Dan konser ini juga menandakan rangkaian tur pendek yang bertajuk : Escape From The Studio. 3 hari selanjutnya konser di lanjutkan ke sebuah festival yaitu Monsters Of Rock Festival di Donington, Inggris. Dan di bulan September 1995, MT mengadakan sebuah konser di Kanada, tepatnya di sebuah tempat di utara Kanada yang terkenal sangat dingin. Konser tersebut bertajuk The Arctic Circle Show. Dan di lanjutkan dengan konser di Tuktoyatuk bersama band : Hole, Veruca Salt dan Moist. Di bulan November kembali MT mengunjungi sebuah tempat bernama Whiskey A Go Go, untuk merayakan hari ulang tahun seorang vokalis sebuah band asal Inggris, Motorhead. Dan di sini MT menyanyikan 7 buah lagu Motorhead. Dan di bulan Desember 1995, MT memasuki sebuah studio di California yang bernama Plant Studio 18 buah lagu untuk album mereka selanjutnya. proses rekaman ini menghabiskan waktu MT sampai di bulan Februari 1996. Dan di bulan yang sama, MT merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : HERO OF THE DAY. Di awal bulan Mei, MT berada di lokasi untuk pembuatan klip Until It Sleeps di sekitar Los Angeles. Menyusul kemudian di rilis single dengan judul yang sama, yang di bagi menjadi 2 buah single yaitu : UNTIL IT SLEEPS PART I dan PART II. Di lanjutkan lagi dengan rilisan single yang berjudul : AIN’T MY BITCH, kemudian sebuah ep yang berjudul MANDATORY METALLICA dan sebuah video yang berjudul : UNTIL IT SLEEPS. Kemudian MT kembali mengunjungi sebuah festival yaitu : Dynamo Festival di Eindhoven, Belanda, di hadapan lebih dari 55000 penggila musik metal, dan di sinilah untuk pertama kalinya di rilis album mereka yang terbaru yaitu : LOAD. Dan akhirnya di tanggal 1 Juni 1996, MT merilis album Load untuk di Jepang, di susul tanggal 3 di seluruh dunia, selain Jepang dan daerah Amerika Utara dan tanggal 4 di Amerika Utara. Selanjutnya kemudian MT tampil di sebuah konser di sebuah konser khusus untuk member di San Fransisco dan disusul juga dengan sebuah konser khusus member di Kanada. Di akhir bulan Juni MT tampil di sebuah festival bernama : Lollapalooza Festival. Bulan Agustus, MT kembali tampil di California bersama dengan Lemmy dari band Motorhead dan juga sebuah band asal Amerika, Overkill. Dan di bulan September, MT memulai kembali tur ke Eropa,  kali ini di mulai di Austria dengan sebuah band bernama Corrosion Of Conformity. Tur Eropa ini di namai : Poor Touring Me. Dalam tur pendek ini MT juga menjadi bintang tamu di sebuah acara yaitu MTV European Video Music Award. Lalu di Spanyol, MT juga merekam sebuah lagu ketika mereka konser di negara itu, lagu yang terpilih adalah : Hero Of The Day. Dan tur Eropa ini berakhir di Denmark di akhir bulan November. Di bulan yang sama, MT merekam 3 buah lagunya untuk sebuah program TV yang berjudul : Later With Jools Holland, sebuah program dari sebuah stasiun tv bernama BBC2, dan di siarkan 3 hari kemudian setelah rekaman selesai. MT kemudian kembali lagi tampil di acara MTV Europe Video Awards dan menyanyikan lagu King Nothing secara live. Tanggal 18 November 1996, MT merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : MAMA SAID. Dan di pertengahan bulan Desember 1996, MT kembali melanjutkan rangkaian tur Poor Toring Me ke Amerika Utara, yang di mulai di California dengan band asal lokal yaitu : Korn, sebagai band pembuka mereka.

Di bulan Januari tahun 1997, tepatnya di pertengahan bulan, lagu MT, King Nothing mulai di tayangkan di MTV. Di tanggal 26 Januari 1997,sang pendiri juga drummer band eduan ini, Lars Ulrich, melangsungkanpernikahannya dengan seorang wanita yang bernama Skylar. Keesokan harinya MT tampil di sebuah acara yang bernama : American Music Awards, dan menyanyikan King Nothing. Masih dalam rangkaian tur panjangnya di Amerika, di akhir bulan Januari 1997, Korn telah menyelesaikan tugasnya sebagai band pembuka dan di gantikan oleh Corrosion Of Conformity. Tur terus berlangsung di kota-kota seantero Amerika. Dan sebuah konser kemudian menutup rangkaian tur panjang ini di sebuah kota di Kanada bernama Edmonton, rangkaian tur Poor Touring Me ini pun berakhir di akhir bulan Mei 1997. Dua bulan kemudian, MT memulai kembali proses rekaman lagu baru mereka. Namun di hentikan untuk sementara karena di tanggal 17 Agustus 1997, sang pendiri band yang juga master band MT, James Hetfield melangsungkan penikahannya dengan wanita bernama : Francesca. Setelah itu kemudian MT juga tampil di Eropa kembali untuk bergabung dalam sebuah festival di kota Hasselt, Belgia, di sebuah festival yang bertajuk : Pukkelpop Festival. Lalu di sebuah festival di Stuttgart, Jerman, bernama :Blindmanâs Ball Festival, dan keesokan harinya juga tampil di sebuah festival di Inggris, Reading Festival. Setelah itu baru MT kembali ke studio untuk menyelesaikan rekaman album barunya dan akhirnya di Oktober 1997 baru MT menyelesaikan proses rekaman album baru tersebut.

Untuk merayakan akan di rilisnya album MT yang baru, band ini kemudian merencanakan sebuah konser yang akan di gelar secara gratis, hanya saja masalahnya di mana mereka akan mengadakan konser tersebut, dan akhirnya di putuskan untuk menanyakan hal tersebut kepada fans fanatik mereka, dan MT menyediakan 800 nomor telepon untuk hal tersebut dan juga beberapa detail tempat yang harus di penuhi, konser ini akan digelar oleh MT pada tanggal 11 November 1997, dan akhirnya hal tempat akan di putuskan dalam 20 hari mendatang. Yang pasti MT menerima tidak kurang dari 150000 telepon dari fansnya. Tanggal 18 Oktober 1997, MT kembali tampil di sebuah acara yang bertajuk : The 11th Annual Bridge School Benefit Shows, di San Fransisco, di sini MT memainkan lagu-lagunya secara akustik dengan bintang tamu Jerry Cantrell asal band Alice In Chains. Konser ini juga kembali di gelar esok harinya di tempat yang sama bersama dengan bintang tamu : Kacy Crowley, Blues Traveler's, Lou Reed, Smashing Pumpkins, Alanis Morissette, Dave Matthew's Band dan Neil Young. Kemudian esok harinya MT berada di lapangan terbang Van Nuys di Los Angeles untuk membuat video lagu : Memory Remains. Kemudian batas waktu untuk pemilihan tempat konser gratis pun habis dan yang menjadi pilihan terbanyak adalah sebuah tempat parkir si Philadelphia yang bernama : CoreStates Arena. Tanggal 10 November 1997, MT merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : MEMORY REMAINS. Esok harinya konser gratis pun di gelar oleh MT, sebuah konser yang sangat sukses terjadi di Philadelphia. Tanggal 13 November 1997, MT kembali menggelar konser gratis kembali di sebuah tempat di London yang bernama : Ministry Of Sound, konser ini juga sebagai tanda di rilisnya album mereka yang terbaru : RE-LOAD. Album ini di rilis tanggal 14 November 1997 untuk Jepang dan sekitarnya. Kemudian di lanjutkan dengan tampil di Jerman dan Denmark di berbagai klub. Dan tanggal 17 November 1997, Re-load di rilis di seluruh dunia secara serentak, kecuali Jepang dan Amerika. Untuk rilisan Amerika, Reload baru beredar di pasaran tanggal 18 November 1997.

Di bulan Desember 1997, tepatnya di tanggal 6, MT menggelar konser di sebuah acara yang bernama : NBC's Saturday Night Live, bersama dengan Marianne Faithfull dan Fuel. Memasuki tahun 1998, di awali dengan pesta pernikahan sang gitaris, Kirk Hammett dengan wanita bernama Lani di Hawaii. Di bulan Februari, single THE UNFORGIVEN II di rilis oleh MT. Bulan Maret 1998, MT tampil di sebuah acara MTV yang bertajuk : ReLoad, Rehearse, Request. Dan kemudian di lanjutkan kembali dengan tur dunia, kali ini MT merambah Asia dan juga Australia. Di mulai di Newcastle, Australia. tur ini baru berakhir sekitar akhir Mei 1998, di Tokyo, Jepang. Di bulan berikutnya MT merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : FUEL. Dan kemudian di lanjutkan dengan rangkaian tur yang bertajuk : Poor Retouring Me Tour. Yang di mulai di Florida. Tur panjang seluruh Amerika ini pun baru berakhir di bulan September 1998 di California, tepatnya di kota San Diego. Setelah tur selesai, MT kembali masuk studio untuk merekam lagu baru nya untuk sebuah album bernama : GARAGE INC. Rekaman terhenti untuk sementara ketika MT harus tampil di sebuah tempat di Los Angeles, bernama Playboy Mansion. MT tampil di hadapan para artis terkenal juga wanita-wanita super cantik

dari seluruh dunia. Wuih sedap tenan. Dan kemudian MT kembali menggelar konser kembali untuk promosi album barunya, di mulai di Canada. Di bulan November 1998, album MT yang terbaru pun di rilis dengan judul : GARAGE INC, sebuah album berisi lagu daur ulang yang terbagi dari 2 buah cd. Di bulan yang sama juga MT berperang dengan Amazon.com yang dengan bebas menjual sebuah live album bootleg yang berjudul : Bay Area Thrashers: The Early Days, di sebuah pengadilan. Dan kemudian Amazon.com berjanji tidak akan menjual album bootleg tersebut. Lalu MT, di tanggal 19 dan 20 November 1998, tampil di 2 buah konser untuk promosi album barunya di Detroit, Michigan. Dan di bulan Desember 1998, MT merilis kembali sebuah video dengan format dvd yang berjudul : CUNNING STUNTS.

Masuk ke tahun berikutnya, 1999, MT di bulan Januari 1999, kembali memperkarakan perusahaan Victoria’s Secret, karena menggunakan nama MT secara illegal, namun akhirnya semua ini di akhir dengan perdamaian antara kedua belah pihak. Di akhir bulan yang sama MT merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : WHISKEY IN THE JAR. Sebuah single yang terdiri dari 3 bagian dan di bagi menjadi 3 buah cd, yang mana bagian ke 2 dan ke 3 hanya di buat sebanyak 10000 buah saja. Akhir Februari MT kembali memperoleh penghargaan Grammi untuk kategori Best Metal Performance, untuk lagu Better Than You. Di bulan selanjutnya MT kembali mendapatkan penghargaan dari asosiasi rekaman Amerika atau RIAA, MT berhak atas penghargaan Diamond, sebuah penghargaan jika sebuah single atau album telah terjual sebanyak 10 juta buah atau lebih. Penghargaan yang sama juga di berikan kepada AC/DC dan The Eagles. Bulan April merupakan permulaan bagi MT untuk kembali menggelar tur yang bertajuk : Garage Remain the Same Tour, yang di mulai di Hawaii. Dalam rangkaian tur tersebut, di akhir bulan April, MT bekerja sama dengan San Francisco Symphony Orchestra dengan kondektor Michael Kamen menggelar sebuah konser yang bertajuk : S & M, singkatan dari Symphony & Metallica, di Berkeley, California. Selanjutnya tur terus berlanjut ke berbagai negara : Meksiko, daerah Amerika Selatan, dan juga Eropa. Konser di Meksiko, MT di temani oleh seorang vokalis bernama Phil "animal" Anselmo untuk bernyanyi sebuah lagu bersama dengan band ini. Tanggal 23 Mei 1999, MT tampil di Dynamo Open Air, dan MT mengundang Evan, Billy dan Danny asal band Biohazard, Scott Ian asal band Anthrax dan Anthony asal band Merauder. Tanggal 5 Juni 1999, ketika konser di Itali, MT juga mengundang bintang tamu yaitu : King Diamond and Hank Sherman, untuk menyanyikan berbagai lagu dari band Mercyful Fate secara medley. Tur panjang ini baru selesai di tanggal 20 Juli 1999 di Lisbon, Spanyol. Empat hari setelah tur Eropa berakhir, MT tampil di sebua festival yang bernama : Woodstock '99. di kota bernama Bethel di New York. Dan akhirnya di akhir bulan November 1999, MT merilis album mereka : S & M dalam bentuk cd, juga beberapa video dalam format dvd yaitu : Cliff 'Em All dan A Year and A Half...bagian 1 & 2. Dan tepat di tanggal 31 Desember 1999, MT tampil bersama Ted Nugent di sebuah show akhir tahun di Pontiac.

Tahun 2000 pun di mulai, 4 Januari 2000, MT merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : NOTHING ELSE MATTERS, single ini merupakan lagu versi S&M. Di lanjutnya dengan tur pendek, dan Kid Rock yang menjadi band pembuka bagi MT. Tanggal 23 Februari 2000, MT tampil untuk mendapatkan penghargaan Grammy, untuk kategori : Best Hard Rock Performance, untuk lagu Whiskey In The Jar. Ini merupakan Grammy mereka yang ke lima. Di awal Maret, MT kembali merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : NO LEAF CLOVER. Kemudian di bulan yang sama MT dan juga kondektor Michael Kamen mendapatkan penghargaan Arthur M. Sochot, untuk hasil yang sangat mengagumkan dari album S & M, dan Lars juga di beri penghargaan California Music, sebagai drummer yang handal. Tanggal 13 April 2000, MT memperkarakan Napster, sebuah tempat di internet yang memungkinkan para pengguna internet untuk mengunduh lagu secara gratis. Dan MT

merasa kalau apa yang di lakukan oleh Napster adalah tidak legal. Dan pada akhirnya MT yang memenangkan perkara ini. Tanggal 19 April 2000, sebuah lagu MT, I Disappear, secara resmi di putar di berbagai stasiun radio di Amerika, yang kemudian lagu ini di masukkan ke dalam sebuah soundtrack film yang berjudul : Mission Impossible II, yang di rilis di bulan Mei 2000. Dan di bulan yang sama MT mengadakan wawancara secara online dengan para penggemarnya membicarakan tentang tujuan MT memperkarakan Napster. Selanjutnya James menjadi bintang tamu di sebuah konser Motorhead di San Fransisco dan bersam-sam Lemmy menyanyikan Overkill. Selanjutnya MT tampil di sebuah acara bertajuk :  2000 MTV Movie Awards, di California. MT menyanyikan lagu yang berjudul : I Disappear. Selanjutnya di bulan yang sama MT merilis  format dvd untuk album : S & M. Lalu juga merilis sebuah single yang berjudul : I DISAPPEAR. Dan tanggal 23 Juni 2000, MT memulai tur pendek di seantero Amerika yang di mulai di Seattle. Di bulan berikutnya sebuah berita duka tersebar ke seantero Amerika, seorang pemuda berusia 21 tahun bernama : Martin Muscheet, meninggal dunia di sebuah konser MT di Baltimore karena terjatuh dari balkon temapt dia

berdiam diri ketika konser berlangsung di sebuah tempat bernama : Psinet Stadium. Di bulan yang sama ketika konser di Atlanta, James mengalami kecelakaan karena terjatuh, hingga harus di rawat di sebuah rumah sakit, hingga 6 buah konser pun di batalkan, namun MT berjanji akan menggantikan konser tersebut di bulan berikutnya. Jadi dalam konser tersebut MT hanya bertiga saja hingga akhirnya konser tersebut di isi dengan bintang tamu yang di undang oleh MT, mereka adalah anggota asal band : Kid Rock, System Of A Down dan Korn. Tanggal 18 Juli 2000, MT tampil di sebuah tempat bernama : House of Blues. Dan di  bulan berikutnya, MT memulai kembali tur yang di batalkan sebulan sebelumnya, karena James mengalami kecelakaan, satu dari enam konser  yang di batalkan pun di gelar dengan bintang tamu : Corrosion of Conformity, sebagai band pembuka. Sebulan kemudian MT kembali ke One On One studio untuk merekam lagu-lagu mereka untuk sebuah program dari VH1 yang berjudul : Classic Albums.

Di bulan November 2000, di sebuah tempat bernama : Maritime Hall, di San Fransisco, sedang di gelar konser dari sebuah band yang bernama :  Misfits, dan James sebagai fans berat dari band ini juga berada di  antara para penonton, kehebohan pun terjadi ketika kemudian para penonton tahu kalau James ada di antara mereka, hingga Misfits pun memanggil sang master untuk bernyanyi bersama dengan mereka, hingga akhirnya 2 lagu mengalir deras dari mulut James, Last Caress dan Die, Die My Darling. Dan di akhir bulan yang sama, MT tampil kembali di  sebuah acara yang bertajuk : VH1 Music Award. Memasuki tahun 2001, MT memulainya dengan sebuah berita yang mengejutkan berbagai pihak di Amerika, fans, media massa, TV, radio, para lebel distributor maupun

yang berada di luar negeri semua shock membaca sebuah surat resmi yang di keluarkan oleh MT, berkenaan dengan keluarnya pemain bas gitar band ini, Jason Newsted serta juga tanggapan dari para anggota band lainnya termasuk Jason sendiri. dan Inilah surat tersebut :

STATEMENT FROM THE MEMBERS OF METALLICA

Metallica regrets to announce that after 14 years as Metallica's bass player, Jason Newsted has chosen to leave the band.

Jason Newsted: "Due to private and personal reasons, and the physical damage that I have done to myself over the years while playing the music that I love, I must step away from the band. This is the most difficult decision of my life, made in the best interest of my family, myself, and the continued growth of Metallica. I extend my love, thanks, and best wishes to my brothers: James, Lars, and Kirk and the rest of the Metallica family, friends, and fans whom have made these years so unforgettable."

James Hetfield: "Playing with someone who has such unbridled passion for music will forever be a huge inspiration. On stage every night, he was a driving force to us all, fans and band alike. His connection will never be broken."

Lars Ulrich: "We part ways with Jason with more love, more mutual respect, and more understanding of each other than at any other point in the past. James, Kirk and I look forward to embracing the next

Berita yang begitu mengguncang publik dan juga anggota band itu  sendiri, hingga semua anggota band begitu terpukul dengan kejadian ini. Selanjutnya di tanggal 11 Februari, di sebuah pameran mainan, MacFarlane Toys Factory merilis patung-patung para anggota MT yang di dasarkan ketika mereka merilis And Justice For All. Kemudian di hari yang sama Lars dan James, bersama-sama mendatangi sebuah konser dari sebuah band, yang di kenal dengan MT yaitu : Corrosion Of Conformity yang sedang menggelar konser di San Jose, dan kali ini James yang bergabung dengan mereka untuk bernyanyi. Tepat 2 hari kemudian MT mendapatkan kabar tentang Napster dan pengadilan memutuskan 3 hal yaitu :

- Napster knew its users were violating copyright laws

- Napster can continue operating until a lower court redrafts its injunction.

- Napster must lock out those users who exchange copyrighted songs without permission as they are infringing on the copyright holders' rights to control the reproduction and distribution of their music.

Sebuah keputusan yang sangat bijaksana bagi semua, tidak bagi MT saja namun bagi semua artis. Selanjutnya di bulan yang sama Lars juga mengunjungi sebuah konser di sebuah bar di San Fransisco, Jerry Cantrell sedang menggelar konsernya di sana, dan Lars bergabung dengan teman dekatnya tersebut dan berperan sebagai roadies. Di akhir bulan tersebut, MT kembali meraih penghargaan Grammy, yang juga merupakan Grammy ke 6 MT, untuk kategori : Best Hard Rock Instrumental Performance untuk lagunya The Call of Ktulu versi S&M. Dan di awal bulan April 2001, MT mendapatkan pernghargaan yang bernama : Artist Contribution Award, di sebuah acara yang di gelar oleh stasiun tv olah raga, ESPN yang bernama : ESPN Action, Sports & Music Awards. Dan esoknya MT kembali masuk ke studio untuk mulai merekam lagu barunya.

Di awal bulan April 2001, Lars kembali berkeliaran ke berbagai konser, kali ini Lars mengujungi Gosmack yang sedang menggelar konser di Chicago di sebuah tempat bernama : UIC Pavilion. Selanjutnya proses rekaman kembali di lakukan oleh MT. Hanya saja proses rekaman kemudian terhenti kembali karena anak Lars lahir. Sedang James menikmati kesenangannya berburu di sebuah hutan di Rusia. Dan Kirk, dalam masa vakum rekaman tersebut, mengujungi sebuah klub bernama Cabo Wabo Cantina Club di Meksiko yang di miliki oleh seorang gitaris keren bernama Sammy Hagar. Dan Kirk di klub ini bernyanyi bersama sebuah band yang berasal dari Meksiko yang bernama : Vitamin T, dan mereka menyanyikan lagu Until It Sleeps. Di akhir bulan Mei, MT kembali bersama memasuki studio untuk melanjutkan proses rekaman. Kemudian tiba musim panas dan MT kembali beristirahat untuk sementara dari jadwal rekaman, Lars dan James merencanakan liburan ke negara lain, sedang Kirk pergi ke Santa Cruz untuk melakukan hobi barunya ...Surfing. Di bulan Juli, MT dan Napster mengumumkan sebuah keputusan bersama yang isinya adalah sebuah kerja sama antara kedua belah pihak, hanya saja belum ada sebuah instrumen yang akan di gunakan untuk maksud tersebut, namun yang pasti MT dalam kerja sama ini, hanya untuk memenuhi keinginan fans. Berita mengejutkan kembali di umumkan oleh MT, tanggal 19 Juli 2001, James masuk ke sebuah panti rehabilitasi untuk menyembuhkan ketergantungannya terhadap alkohol dan obat lainnya. Oh James !!! Hingga proses rekaman kembali terhambat. 

Di awal bulan September 2001, kembali anggota band MT, Kirk dan Lars dengan tiba-tiba datang ke sebuah pergelaran musik di San Fransisco, sebuah pergelaran yang diadakan yang semuanya berhubungan dengan MT, dan ketika sebuah band cover MT bernama Creeping Death sedang tampil, tiba-tiba Kirk dan Lars masuk ke atas panggung, kebayang bagaimana hebohnya para penonton kala itu, dan mereka menyanyikan : Die, Die My Darling, No Remorse, Helpless, ...And Justice For All, Ride the Lightning, dan terakhir lagu Am I Evil. Di bulan November 2001, MT merilis sebuah format dvd dengan judul : CLASSIC ALBUMS. Dan di minggu kedua bulan Desember, James pun keluar dari panti rehabilitasi. Selanjutnya MT kembali tampil di sebuah acara MTV yang bernama MTV ICON yang sedang menggelar acara yang bertajuk : A Tribute To Aerosmith, acara ini berlangsung di tanggal 14 April 2002. Baru kemudian di tanggal 1 Mei 2002, MT kembali memasuki studio untuk melanjutkan proses rekaman yang telah lama tertunda. Dan di waktu itu MT memutuskan untuk mencari seorang pemain bas gitar yang baru. Setelah melakukan berbagai audisi yang melelahkan, akhirnya pilihan jatuh ke tangan seorang pemain bas yang pernah bermain untuk band Suicidal Tendencies, Ozzy Osbourne dsb, yaitu ROBERT TRUJILLO. Hingga akhirnya Robert pun resmi menjadi anggota band MT. Pengalaman bermain selama 15 tahun memang memungkinkan Robert untuk terpilih menjadi pengganti Jason. Di awal Mei 2002, Lars dan Kirk bergabung dengan Sammy Hagar dan Michael Anthony dalam sebuah band yang bernama : High Maintenance untuk tampil di Fillmore, San Fransisco. Kemudian MT kembali lagi ke studio untuk melanjutkan rekaman kembali. Di bulan November 2002, MT merilis album live mereka yang terdahulu : Live Shit: Binge and Purge dalam format dvd. Di bulan selanjutnya MT bergabung dengan seorang rapper bernama : Ja Rule untuk bersama-sama  berkolaborasi dengan sebuah band asal Swiss bernama : G.H.E.T.T.O, untuk menyanyikan lagu : We Did it Again. 

Di awal tahun 2003, MT mengumumkan kembali sebuah rangkaian tur yang bertajuk : Summer Sanitarium Tour 2003, kali MT akan bersama dengan band : Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Deftones dan Mudvayne. Di bulan Februari 2003, MT menyatakan kalau Robert Trujillo telah menjadi anggota band ini. Proses rekaman pun akhirnya selesai di bulan April 2003, dan esoknya proses mastering di lakukan di New York dan selesai di tanggal 9 bulan yang sama. Di akhir bulan April, MT berada di penjara di San Quentin untuk membuat klip untuk album baru mereka : St. Anger. Di bulan Mei 2003, MT merilis sebuah single dengan judul : ST. ANGER. Dan bulan selanjutnya album baru MT pun di rilis dengan judul yang sama dengan single mereka : ST. ANGER. Dan di awal bulan Juni, MT pun mulai menggelar konser mereka di Eropa. Di akhir Juni 2003, single St. Anger di rilis di Jepang, tapi berupa ep. Akhir bulan Juli, MT berada di Kanada untuk membuat video lagu : Frantic. Sebulan kemudian video tersebut dapat di saksikan pertama kali oleh publik pada website resmi MT. Kemudian rangkaian tur pun di lanjutkan di Amerika. Di pertengahan bulan Agustus, sebuah album tribute, yang berjudul I've Always Been Crazy: Tribute to Waylon Jennings di rilis, di mana di dalamnya James Hetfield menyanyikan sebuah lagu yang berjudul : Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Gone Out Of Hand. Dan di akhir bulan yang sama, MT kembali tampil di sebuah acara MTV yang bertajuk : MTV Video Music Awards, dan kali ini MT menyanyikan lagu secara medley, dan lagu tersebut : Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way? lalu Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit, di lanjutkan dengan White Stripes - Seven Nation Army juga lagu Michael Jackson - Beat It dan terakhir Frantic. Selanjutnya di akhir bulan September 2003, MT merilis kembali sebuah single yang berjudul : FRANTIC. Di bulan Oktober, MT berada di Los Angeles untuk membuat video lagu : The Unnamed Feeling. Dan di akhir tahun 2003, MT tampil di sebuah konser akhir tahun di Las Vegas. 

Tahun 2004, di awali MT dengan merilis kembali sebuah single dan  sebuah ep dengan judul yang sama yaitu : THE UNNAMED FEELING. MT kemudian melanjutkan rangkain turnya ke Eropa, Jepang dan terakhir di Australia. Dan di akhir bulan yang sama film Some Kind Of Monster di tayangkan pada acara Sundance Film Festival di Utah. Dan di bulan  melanjutnya kembali MT meraih penghargaan Grammy untuk kategori : Best Metal Performance, untuk lagu St. Anger. Di bulan Maret 2004, MT memulai kembali rangkaian tur terbarunya yaitu Madly In Anger With The World, yang di gelar di Amerika Utara. MT kembali memperoleh sebuah penghargaan bernama Governors Award, dari sebuah lembaga akademi yang bernama San Francisco Chapter of the Recording Academy, untuk kategori : Creative Excellence and Outstanding Achievement. 2 bulan kemudian kembali sebuah penghargaan di raih oleh MT, kali ini sebuah penghargaan yang bernama : Creative Voice Award, yang di berikan oleh ASCAP atas jasanya dalam dunia musik di Amerika. Bulan selanjutnya giliran sang gitaris Kirk Hammett yang memperoleh penghargaan, Outstanding Guitarist Award di sebuah acara bertajuk : California Music Awards. Di bulan Juli, MT kembali merilis sebuah ep yang berjudul : SOME KIND OF MONSTER. Agustus 2004, Mt merilis sebuah buku yang berjudul : So What! The Good, The Mad, The Ugly. Dan rangkaian tur Madly In Anger With The World pun berakhir di tanggal 29 November 2004 di San Jose, California. 

Mengawali tahun yang baru, 2005, MT mengumumkan, kalau dalam tahun 2005 ini mereka akan beristirahat untuk sementara dalam berbagai hal yang berhubungan dengan musik, waktu istirahat ini akan di gunakan untuk menambah wawasan dalam hal kraetivitas dan juga mental band ini. Dan itulah yang memang terjadi dengan band ini, di tahun 2005, hampir di katakan tidak banyak hal yang mereka lakukan. Hanya tampil di 2 konser di daerah mereka bersama dengan band The Rolling Stones. Selain itu hanya merilis 2 format dvd, yaitu LIVE IN SAN DIEGO dan SOME KIND OF MONSTER dan juga sebuah box set yang berisi 3 cd yang berjudul : ST. DANGER. Dan kemudian di awal tahun 2006, MT mulai kembali memasuki studio untuk menulis lagu baru dan juga mereka menjalin kerja sama yang baru dengan seorang produser yang sangat terkenal : Rick Rubin. Hanya saja kemudian proses rekaman kembali menggelar konser yang bertajuk : Escape From The Studio '06, yang di mulai di bulan Juni 2006 dan berakhir di pertengahan bulan Agustus 2006. MT kali ini menggelar konser di Eropa, Jepang, Korea dan Afrika Selatan. Dan yang pasti sebuah lagu baru di nyanyikan oleh MT ketika mereka konser di Berlin, Jerman. Dan di akhir tahun 2006, MT merilis sebuah video dengan format dvd yang berjudul : THE VIDEOS 1989 - 2004.

Dan di tahun 2007 ini, di mana rekaman masih juga belum selesai, MT kembali menggelar sebuah tur yang bertajuk : Sick Of The Studio 07. Tur ini merupakan tur mereka hanya untuk Eropa saja. Tur ini di mulai tanggal 28 Juni 2007 di Lisbon dan berakhir di tanggal 18 Juli 2007 di Moscow, Rusia.
